Lagerman Agricultural Preserve
Lagerman Agricultural Preserve is a wide-open agricultural and grassland preserve located in northwestern Longmont, Colorado.
With very few trees or visual obstructions, the area offers expansive views and a strong sense of openness under the Colorado sky.
The Open Sky Loop is a clearly marked loop trail that circles the preserve.
Because the terrain is mostly flat and the route is easy to follow, it is suitable for a wide range of visitors—from casual walkers to hikers looking for a longer, relaxed outing.
On clear days, the trail offers excellent views of the Front Range, including Longs Peak, one of the most iconic peaks in the Colorado Rockies.
The combination of open prairie, distant mountains, and changing light makes this trail especially appealing for photography.
⚠️ Note: There is very little shade along the trail. Be sure to bring enough water and sun protection, especially in warmer months.

Parking & Trailhead
A large parking area is located on the north side of Lagerman Lake, providing convenient access to the trail system.
Even on weekends, parking is generally available.

The trailhead is clearly marked near the parking lot, making navigation straightforward for first-time visitors.

Route & Distance
- Distance: approximately 4.9 miles (7.9 km)
- Route type: loop

The trail runs alongside the access road before joining the Open Sky Loop.

Because the route is simple and mostly uninterrupted, turning back midway means retracing the same distance.
Once you are halfway through the loop, returning to the parking area can take a significant amount of time—plan accordingly and carry water.
Lagerman Lake & Wildlife
Lagerman Lake, located near the parking area, is an important wildlife habitat.
The western side of the lake is protected, and many species of waterfowl can be observed throughout the year.

At certain times, large birds such as American White Pelicans may be seen resting or feeding near the lake.
Trail Scenery
The Open Sky Loop is mostly flat and easy to walk, making it accessible and relaxing.

Highlights include:
- Scattered cottonwood trees standing alone in open grassland

- Wide views of the Rocky Mountain foothills and peaks
- Agricultural landscapes featuring large irrigation systems

The mix of preserved farmland and natural open space reflects Boulder County’s unique approach to land conservation.
