Trail Overview
Gentle terrain and easy walking
Both the South Boulder Creek Trail and the Lower Big Bluestem Trail to the north feature gentle rolling terrain, making this loop suitable for casual hikes and relaxed walks.

Rock Formations
Buffalo-shaped rock
From the western side of the loop, along the Lower Big Bluestem Trail, you can spot a rock formation that resembles the shape of a buffalo.

Tall rock and shadows
On sunny days, tall rock formations cast striking shadows across the ground, creating dramatic natural scenes along the trail.

Trees
Smooth Sumac (Anacardiaceae)
Smooth Sumac grows in clusters along the western side of the South Boulder Creek Trail.
In early June, the plants may appear dry at first glance, but closer inspection reveals fresh new leaves emerging near the base.

Autumn foliage
In November, Smooth Sumac turns a deep red, adding vibrant fall colors along the trail.

Flowers
Wildflower meadow
In early June, sections of the South Boulder Creek Trail are surrounded by small wildflowers blooming across open meadows.


Rocky Mountain Iris
Rocky Mountain Iris can be found in early May in the grasslands south of the Lower Big Bluestem Trail.

Animals
Grazing cattle
In this area, you may encounter cattle grazing in open pastureland adjacent to the trail.
